Duties and Responsibilities

The UCL Institute for Global Health (IGH) wishes to appoint a Research Assistant/Research Associate in Global Health. The post-holder will join a 13-year partnership between UCL and SNEHA. The current focus is on a randomised controlled trial of community intervention to prevent violence against women and girls in urban India.

The main duty of the post is research on community mobilisation to prevent violence against women and girls in urban informal settlements in India. The role focuses on developing an understanding of novel ways to evaluate community mobilisation for behaviour change, including collective efficacy and social capital.

The post-holder will design, pilot, and supervise implementation of evaluative research in informal settlements in Mumbai, develop an analysis plan, conduct first-phase analyses, and draft peer-reviewed articles. Previous research experience is essential.

The post-holder will have demonstrable experience of research on community mobilisation and will spend one or two periods of up to two months in Mumbai.

The post is available from July 2017 and is available for one year in the first instance.

Key Requirements

The candidate will have a Masters Degree in a health-related discipline. Candidates who have completed a postgraduate degree (PhD or equivalent) in such a discipline will be preferred.

The post-holder will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a high level of literacy and numeracy and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, communicating clearly, both orally and in writing, with colleagues at all levels.

The post is graded as Grade 6B, Research Assistant with MSc, or equivalent, with relevant experience in health economics or development economics. The salary for which ranges from £29,809 to £31,432 per annum (including London Allowance of £2,980), depending on skills and experience.

A candidate appointed at Grade 7, Research Associate, is dependent upon being awarded a PhD. Grade 7 ranges from £34,056 to £41,163 per annum (including London Allowance of £2,980), depending on skills and experience.

Research Associate is educated to PhD level in a health-related field. If the degree has not yet been granted, the final accepted version of the thesis should have been submitted to the degree granting university by the time of starting.
