Salary:  

Research Assistant: £31,396 to £32,982 per annum

Research Associate: £33,966 to £44,263 per annum

The role

This is an exciting opportunity to join Newcastle University School of computing as a Research Assistant / Research Associate. In collaboration with Spotta, Cambridge and based at Newcastle University you will help to achieve an Accelerated Knowledge Transfer Partnership’s objectives to develop a novel AI-enabled a pest surveillance system using embedded computer vision.

You will be required to deliver key innovations around computer vision and artificial intelligence working with academic and industrial specialists in the area. They will draw upon their postgraduate research and translate current theory and research outputs into the company in a practical way. They will be required to contribute novel ideas and enhanced techniques and methodologies ultimately leading to significant technological breakthroughs and publications.

You will have an MSc or PhD (or near competition of PhD) in Computer Science or related discipline with specialisation in computer vision or embedded systems together with significant experience in algorithm development.

Key Accountabilities
•    On boarding to the project including familiarisation with the company and university, creation of a document depository and complete literature review
•    Research, develop and test a prototype, system set up and integration with Spotta
•    Disseminate and embed the knowledge within Spotta to various stakeholders throughout the mini-KTP via reports, presentations and group discussions
•    Present findings to stakeholders prepare and complete full documentation

The Person 


Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

•    A good knowledge and understanding of computer vision and embedded systems
•    Significant experience in algorithm development
•    Experience in writing technical documents or track record in peer-reviewed publications
•    Experience of coding in Python
•    Experience in data visualization and business case development

•    Good interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate at all levels and good teamworking skills
•    The ability to work autonomously, personal motivation and drive
•    Excellent organisational skills
•    Ability to work to deadlines

Qualifications

MSc or PhD (or near completion) in Computer Science or related discipline with specialization in computer vision and embedded systems.
