Do you have a strong technical background in computational damage mechanics with an interest in tissue biomechanics? Would you like to work as part of a multidisciplinary institute to address a clinically driven challenge?

We are looking for a proactive individual to join our team of researchers at the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering , leading research on longer lasting joint replacements, tissue sparing interventions and biological scaffolds for tissue regeneration.

This role is created part of the EPSRC Open Fellowship MSKDamage . In the UK, musculoskeletal disorders affect one in five people long term. New surgical interventions are being developed to repair or locally replace soft MSK tissues in order to delay or prevent a total joint replacement. Their outcomes are strongly dependent on the local anatomy or level of tissue degeneration which differ greatly between patients, and there is currently a lack of biomechanical evidence that factor in these large variations to help matching patients to interventions. MSKDamage will develop novel multiscale testing methods combining experimental and computational modelling to gain a better understanding of the local damage caused by interventions depending on tissue degeneration and how it affects joint function.

This position will develop computational models at the tissue scale able to predict damage due to interventions. You will have a strong background in computational damage mechanics for fibrous materials and have a proactive approach to working in an experimental and computational environment. You will join an institute that includes different expertise and substantial experience in supporting early-stage researchers in a key phase of their career. We encourage an environment of collaboration, trust and wellbeing, which values difference of ideas and embraces diversity.
