About us:

The Addictions Department, also known as the National Addiction Centre (NAC), is one of the most productive addictions research groups in Europe. We represent an important area of health-related study as the Addictions Clinical Academic Group (CAG) within King’s Health Partners, and form one of the core areas of the Academic Health Science Centre that brings together university partners King’s College London with the NHS from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust,  King’s College Hospital , and Guy’s and St Thomas’ . RAND Europe rated our work on Substance Abuse Research as leading in the field.. Substance Use Disorders is one of the main themes of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre for Mental Health which is based at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). 


About the role:

The Research Assistant position will be part time and based at the Addictions department (IOPPN). The successful candidate will work with Prof Sir John Strang and Dr Julia Rozanova and play a crucial role in supporting and contributing to research project PRET (Prison Release Engagement Trial). They will work closely with PRET team to ensure effective collaboration and coordination of research activities. This position requires prior experience with the development and submission of PRET funding proposal, knowledge of literature on opioid use disorder treatment in prisons and after release in the community, established working relationship with PRET team members and partners in KCL, CMI, and with PPI leader Mr Martin Smith, strong organizational skills, excellent communication abilities, and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team. Understanding UK Government priorities towards linkage of prison-leavers to opioid use disorder treatment is also essential to this post. 

This is a part time post (50% FTE), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 30 June 2027.


About you:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1.       MSc in Addictions or in wider Mental Health or related field

2.      In-depth understanding of PRET study aims, including., established working relationships with key stakeholders and PRET team members at King’s and externally (Mr Martin Smith, Mr Steven Jenkins, and others).

3.      Experience in supporting the management of research projects at KCL (familiarity with protocol development, ethics applications, etc).

4.      Excellent organizational and time management skills.

5.      Strong written and verbal communication skills.

6.      Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and work well within a team.

7.      Proactive attitude, showing initiative when faced with challenges and demonstrating problem-solving skills

Desirable criteria

1.      Knowledge of literature in prison-leaving and linkage to OAT care in the UK .

2.      Emerging interest and experience with PPI engagement of prison-leavers with OUD
