We are seeking a research assistant who has experience in mass spectrometry or analytical chemistry to contribute to ongoing projects in the core Metabolomics and Lipidomics laboratory. A major part of the work will be to investigate the molecular basis of neurodegeneration using a combination of cell culture models and single cell lipidomics. This is a joint project in the laboratories of Dr. Albert Koulman and Dr. Emmanouil Metzakopian funded by the Michael J Fox Foundation (MJFF, https://www.michaeljfox.org/ ), and will enable the successful applicant to join an international network using innovative approaches to tackle major challenges in human health.
Your work in our world-class institute would expose you to cutting-edge approaches (e.g. single cell lipidomics), and provide access to collaborators in academia and industry. With on-the-job training in this intellectually stimulating environment, this position provides an ideal opportunity for you to advance your career.
You will work with high resolution mass spectrometry for detailed lipid and metabolite analysis and help to generate and maintain primary neural cell cultures, perform fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) and help to develop liquid extraction surface analysis and high resolution mass spectrometry methods for single cell. You will also help to ensure the smooth functioning of the laboratory.
To be considered for this position, you must 1) possess a university degree or MSc in biology or a related field and demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of cell culture and molecular biology, 2) have demonstrable laboratory or industry experience in mass spectrometry, analytical chemistry or primary cell culture, 3) be dependable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented, and 4) possess organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. The ideal applicant would have some technical expertise with mass spectrometry analysis. Experience in laboratory management, cell culture, and bioinformatics would also be advantageous.
Informal inquiries can be made to Dr. Albert Koulman at firstname.lastname@example.org with reference number RG 27037 in the subject line.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 August 2022 in the first instance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment. This appointment also requires a Research Passport application.
Click the 'Apply' button below to register an account with our recruitment system (if you have not already) and apply online.
Please ensure that you upload a covering letter and CV in the Upload section of the online application. The covering letter should outline how you match the criteria for the post and why you are applying for this role. If you upload any additional documents which have not been requested, we will not be able to consider these as part of your application.
Please include details of your referees, including email address and phone number, one of which must be your most recent line manager.
Closing Date: 11th July 2021
