The British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) is looking to appoint a Research Assistant in International Economic Law for a period of six months, primarily to help with empirical studies in the area of international investment law.

Job Description

The Research Assistant in International Economic Law will be expected to undertake the following:

  • Assisting in the coordination and organisation of research activities;
  • Contributing to the production of high-quality research in the area of international law including, where appropriate, assisting with desk-based research, literature reviews, data collection and analysis, drafting of proposals and submissions, report writing and drafting of articles, social media content etc;
  • Assisting in the management and co-ordination of events; and
  • Working as part of a team with other researchers.

The Research Assistant will be primarily assisting the Director of the Investment Treaty Forum

This is a part-time post (0.4 FTE), for 6 months. The role will be paid £24,000 pro rata. It is hoped that the person appointed will commence on September 1.

Person Specification

The successful applicant will demonstrate and provide evidence of the following skills and attributes:

Knowledge:

  • Well-rounded knowledge of public international law and international arbitration;
  • Interest in the area of international investment law would be of particular advantage, as well as interest in the areas of technology and dispute resolution;

Education and experience:

  • LLM or equivalent degree, some relevant practical experience would be an advantage;
  • Some prior experience in research and publications would be of benefit.

Research and drafting skills:

  • Ability to analyse complex and detailed materials and draw conclusions in a clear and precise manner;
  • Proficient in conducting research through electronic means and resources.

Language skills:

  • Very high level of proficiency in English.

Other skills:

  • Familiarity with empirical methodology and data-driven analysis of law;
  • Good working knowledge of Excel (including the pivot tables functionality);
  • Good administrative, IT and organisational skills;
  • Collaborative, collegial and articulate team member.
