We have a position available in the group of Dr. Yorgo Modis in the Molecular Immunity Unit in the Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge to research host-virus coevolution. This post is funded by the Wellcome Trust.
The overall goal of the group's research program is to understand at the molecular level how cells recognize viral nucleic acids and respond with the necessary sensitivity and specificity. The specific topic that the postholder will focus their research is the structure and function of viral proteins that have been endogenized in the genome of their host organism. We integrate deep mechanistic insights from structural studies with functional validation in the cellular context.
We seek a highly motivated research scientist to study host-virus interactions and coevolution using cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), fluorescence light microscopy and cell-based functional assays.
Candidates must have a Masters (MPhil or MSc)* in the biological, biochemical or biomedical sciences; relevant research experience in cryo-ET (data collection or image processing); and relevant research experience in fluorescence microscopy. Candidates must have coauthored at least one research article published in a major peer-reviewed journal or under review with a preprint available. Experience in bioinformatics, cell-based assays, or virology is desirable.
*Candidates in the process of submitting their Master thesis or awaiting degree conferral will be considered.
The Modis group is part of the Molecular Immunity Unit within the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC-LMB). We benefit from the truly outstanding scientific environment and infrastructure of the MRC-LMB, and from close links with the infectious disease and immunology community in the Department of Medicine.
The position is available for two years in the first instance.
Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to Dr. Modis at [email protected] .
