The Role and Department

Founded in 1952, the Department of Psychology is consistently ranked as one of the very best in the UK with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research and student employability. The department is committed to creating and maintaining a research environment that spans the entire breadth of psychology. Currently the department’s research falls within three groupings: Cognitive Neuroscience, Developmental Science, and Quantitative Social Psychology.

The department is extremely well-equipped for research, including facilities for fMRI, TMS, tDCS, EEG/ERP, VR, eye movement tracking, and biophysiological recording. The department also has a motion capture lab for analysis of visuomotor action and experiments in immersive VR, a ‘bar’ lab for naturalistic studies in health psychology, and setups for psychophysics including an echo-attenuated chamber.

In 2022, the Department received its third Athena SWAN Silver Award recognising our commitment to advancing women's careers in STEM academia and reflecting the supportive and positive environment within the Department.

The successful candidate will join the vibrant Behaviour and Physiology Group who host regular meetings and activities, as well as have the opportunity to join a host of exciting inter-disciplinary networks in the University such as those supporting early career researchers. The successful candidate will gain opportunities to learn about different research methodologies and technologies utilised by the faculty in the department and adopt best practices to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and replicability.

The Role

The 9-month fixed-term Research Assistant (RA) position is available 3 ½ days per week in the Department of Psychology at Durham University. The successful candidate will join the research project “Solitude as Opportunity for Rest in Everyday Life” led by Dr Thuy-vy Nguyen and funded by UKRI ESRC grant. The project focuses on how we can cultivate the benefits of time spent alone for relaxation and rest.

The Project:

Expectations: The successful applicant will mostly help with coordinating advisory team meeting for the project, such as soliciting feedback and devising solutions to move the project forward. The candidate will also help managing the project website, which includes synthesising research findings in accessible format, coming up with creative ways to collect tangible data from visitors to the website, and tracking engagement. Standard RA responsibilities and specific requirements are listed in more detail below.

This post is ideal for those who have finished a master’s degree and want to gain more work and research experience before pursuing a PhD. This position will prepare the post holder research experience valuable to future independent work aimed toward impactful research with community samples.

Responsibilities:

  • To gain sufficient knowledge of the literature on solitude to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  • To organise advisory panel, including sending emails, coordinating meeting times, taking notes during meetings, soliciting feedback and devising solutions to move the project forward based on feedback.
  • To understand and convey information which needs careful explanation to the team or group of people through presentations, discussions and meetings which contribute to the production of research reports and publications.
  • To manage the project website, which includes synthesising research findings in accessible format, coming up with creative ways to collect tangible data from visitors to the website, and tracking equipment.
  • To contribute to the planning of research, including development of questionnaires and participant recruitment.
  • To write up results of research work, present information on research progress and outcomes to bodies supervising research in a clear and accurate manner.
  • To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder and offering creative or innovative solutions.
  • To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
  • To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.
  • To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline.
  • To engage in continuing professional development by attending relevant training and development courses.   

This post is fixed term for 9 months; the project is time limited and will end on 28th February 2025.

The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

    Person Specification

    Essential Criteria:

  • Experience in moderating group discussion and writing meeting reports.
  • Experience in designing and managing website to effectively communicate research information to website visitors.
  • Experience in conducting a literature search using databases like MEDLINE, Web of Science, Google Scholar, etc.
  • Experience in survey design and participant recruitment platforms such as Qualtrics and Prolific
  • Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including leading research meetings and moderating. conversations to gather feedback.
  • Demonstrable ability to produce concise and well-written reports.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work to strict deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in critically evaluating research quality through examining sample sizes, research design, and effect sizes, etc.
  • Experience of preparing academic papers.
  • Demonstrable ability to work with different software that manage workflow (this does not need prior experience, but candidate must feel comfortable working with new software).
  • Ability to contribute to the planning and management of independent research. 
  • Demonstrable knowledge of best research practices and enthusiasm for those practices (e.g., open science, data sharing, working with open-source data analysis program like R).
