Research Assistant - CellOps

The world-famous and internationally respected Wellcome Sanger Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant to join the Cellular Operations (CellOps) division as part of the Gene Editing team.

About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic Research Assistant to contribute to the delivery of our extensive portfolio of projects by providing key lab support. You will be involved in the production and validation of custom vectors required for genome engineering, CRISPR screening and high-throughput cloning.

Responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out essential molecular biology processes (e.g. PCR, cloning and MiSeq).
  • Routine cell culture and cellular characterization.
  • Working closely with senior staff to plan and execute experiments.
  • Interpreting data.
  • Developing protocols.
  • Contributing to the general upkeep of the lab, including monitoring stocks, plasmid production, inventory management and assisting in lab organisation. 

About You 

  • A background in molecular biology, with a BSc in a relevant subject or practical experience.
  • Exemplary organisation skills, able to juggle multiple tasks, whilst maintaining quality.
  • Enjoy collaborative environments, willingly support others, share results and take advantage of the ample experience within the group.
  • Highly motivated with a strong desire to learn new techniques and concepts, to allow the Gene Editing team to constantly develop to ensure continued cutting-edge research.

About the Team

We facilitate the Wellcome Sanger Institute’s world leading genomic research by providing the expertise and resources required to deliver advanced genome engineering projects that enable faculty researchers to focus on their scientific objectives. The two main services that we provide are: cellular engineering, using bespoke gene editing approaches to generate novel cell lines, and custom vector construction, providing high quality gene delivery and gene editing tools.
