This is an exciting opportunity within Birmingham City University for an ambitious and collaborative junior researcher to join a vibrant, dynamic, and expanding research centre. We are proud to promote a cross phase, multi-disciplinary health research ethos with an emphasis on equality, diversity, and inclusion. This role will suit a junior member of staff looking to commence or develop their research career.

The post-holder will work with colleagues in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, but be based within the Centre for Social Care, Health and Related Research (C-SCHaRR). Our research centre has four key clusters, which include Gender, Family and Health, Knowledge to Care, Person-Centred Ageing and the Elizabeth Bryan Multiple Birth Centre. 

We are seeking to appoint an ambitious early career researcher, who is either near completion or who has completed their doctorate, in an area cognisant with our work in C-SCHaRR. Our ideal candidate will have a practitioner health profile, with some experience of project work and related activities such as bid writing and aspects of project delivery or co-ordination.

Whilst we welcome applications from colleagues in any area of our practice, we are particularly looking to strengthen our capacity and capability in the areas of family health, dementia, positive ageing and knowledge to care.

The appointable candidate will be able to undertake research as appropriate to the field of study including:

a. Writing up research work for publication. 

b. Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research. 

c. Making presentations at national and international conferences and similar events. 

d. Continually update knowledge and understanding in field or specialism and develop skills. 

e. Dealing with problems which may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines 

f. Analysing and interpreting the results of own research and generating original ideas based on outcomes. 

g. Using new research techniques and methods. 

h. Using initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, developing new research methods and extending the research portfolio. 

i. Using creativity to analyse and interpret research data and draw conclusions on the outcomes.

The desirable qualities of the appointable candidate are:

  • Possess sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes
  • Evidence of research activity and published research is desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature
  • Able to manage research and administrative activities and to balance competing pressures of research and administrative demands and deadlines
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise with colleagues and students
  • Able to build contacts and participate in internal and external networks for the exchange of information and collaboration.
  • Able to identify potential sources of funding.
  • Evidence of engagement in continuous professional development.
  • Understand equal opportunity issues and how they may impact on areas of research
  • Understanding of Health and Safety requirements and experience of carrying out risk assessments
  • Experience of undergraduate teaching is desirable.
