Job summary

The Dyson School of Design Engineering is a leader in research on the design of technologies that support health and wellbeing. The youngest of all Engineering schools at Imperial College, its research has consistently been ranked among the highest, and its teaching quality was rated as excellent in a previous national assessment.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant/Associate to perform user-research and design an app for dementia support. The Research Assistant/Associate will be working with Professor Rafael Calvo, Ravi Vaidyanathan and the Helix Centre (at Imperial) as part of a project funded by the Dementia Research Institute. The role will combine strong design expertise, participatory design and qualitative methods from psychology and human-computer interaction, and good software development skills.

The successful applicant will have a MEng or PhD (or equivalent) in Design Engineering, Innovation Design Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related area, and will have design experience.  Excellent quantitative research experience is needed and experience in designing mobile apps, and/or conversational agents is strongly desirable.

You must have excellent communication skills and be able to organise your work with minimal supervision, and to prioritise work to meet deadlines.


Duties and responsibilities

  • MEngdegree or higher in Design, Design

  • Engineering or equivalent

  • Experience conducting qualitative and quantitative user experience research 

  • Experience in the design and implementation of mobile and web applications 

  • Evidence of previous work in multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder environments 

  • Understanding of the research process 

  • Willingness to work flexibly to achieve project demands 

  • Ability to organise and prioritise own work and organise research within the project timetable 

  • Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature 


Essential requirements

Further information

This is a full-time (FTE of 1.0) role for 24 months. Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range of £40,694 to £43,888per annum.
