Job summary

The successful candidate will work with a dedicated team, funded by EPSRC, and of interacting closely with a consortium that includes key aerospace, automotive and energy industries.

Our aim is to develop a new generation of advanced damage-tolerant materials, drawing inspiration both from recent research and biomimetics. Our goal is to design these micro-structures and to then develop suitable prototyping methods to realise them in practice. Finally, we will create relevant prototypes for various industries. 

Applicants should demonstrate an ability to develop and use numerical modelling techniques for simulating fracture in composites, or an ability to conceive, prototype and test bespoke composite materials. For a Research Associate position, applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant area. For a Research Assistant position, applicants should have a Master’s (or equivalent) and be working towards a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant area. Applicants are expected to have a strong publication record, commensurate with their experience.


Duties and responsibilities

The post will involve carrying out research in advanced bio-inspired composites, undertaking project management and/or supervising multi-disciplinary teams and submitting publications to refereed journals and conferences.  There will be opportunities for travel and for close interaction with world leading academic/industrial project partners.


Essential requirements

Applicants are required to have experience in the following:

  • Fibre-reinforced composites
  • Finite elements
  • Fracture Mechanics

Those appointed at Research Associate level

Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Aeronautics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience.

Those appointed at Research Assistant level

Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Aeronautics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694- £39,888 per annum.
