A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on 3D Printed Orthoses. The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
Around the world 20-33% of people suffer from a painful musculoskeletal condition. Orthoses (braces) are external devices that can significantly ameliorate these conditions by supporting the limbs or spine. Existing orthoses, however, feature many limitations including being uncomfortable to wear and causing dependence.
3D printing offers virtually limitless opportunities to make devices by controlling geometry, material composition, and processing conditions at every point in an object. In the same way that biological materials are able to achieve properties far beyond those of their constituents through complex and locally varying structures, novel 3D printed orthoses could feature unprecedented combinations of properties and functionality.
The Principal Investigator (Sebastian Pattinson) has recently been awarded Wellcome Trust funding to develop and translate a novel orthosis design. The candidate will prototype new structures and materials and assist with pilot trials of these devices. They will gain experience in a broad range of areas including computational design, biomechanics, materials science, and medical devices. There will also be diverse opportunities for clinical collaborations including at the Cambridge University Hospitals.
The key responsibilities and duties are prototyping new 3D printed structures and materials, as well as assisting with pilot trials of the devices. The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are finite element modelling, biomechanical analysis, medical device design, clinical trials, 3D printing, and research.
This post can be held at either the Research Associate or Research Assistant level, depending on the candidate, though preference will be given to PhD holders. Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD or equivalent experience. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,243 - £30,395 Research Associate: £32,236 - £39,609
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
