Immersive technology is a powerful tool for delivering exciting and engaging public experiences, however, it brings with it a number of technical challenges for those who wish to apply it in their business models. Not least of which is the skill required to actually prototype and develop such experiences.

The ERDF funded LEADD:NG project seeks to support small business enterprises (SMEs) in Nottingham and the surrounding area by providing access to training and ideation around the use of immersive technology. This will include a range of activities from large workshops to focussed support in bringing new ideas to prototype stage.

We seek a skilled, creative, and flexible developer, who is prepared to work simultaneously on several small-scale projects and equipped to work with a range of different immersive technologies and in a range of different fields, including art, performance, cultural heritage and others. The position will require knowledge of the core technologies such as: virtual and augmented reality, game engines like Unity3D and Unreal, mobile and desktop programming skills, and potentially audio and music technologies. Some knowledge of web-based systems (e.g. AR.js) would also be helpful. Experience of rapid prototyping and also games development would be a plus, as many of the techniques for working with these systems share characteristics with that field.

This is an opportunity for somebody with already strong programming skills to learn these additional skills. We recognize that many of these skills can be learned on the job, so our key requirement is for a competent and creative developer able to multitask on several different projects, and able to work reliably with a high degree of autonomy. A significant part of the role will be interacting directly with the SMEs, so the ideal candidate will be professional, good natured, and able to adapt to working with a range of different individuals and companies – often at the same time.

We offer an opportunity for the ideal candidate to bring their skills and experience into the creative interdisciplinary team addressing the application of immersive technology to a range of fields – and gain new skills and experience in return. Previous experience working across disciplines would be beneficial.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 24 months.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Paul Tennent by email ([email protected] ) however, applications must be submitted online via http://jobs.nottingham.ac.uk .
