The Role and the Department

The School of Education has an exciting opportunity for an experienced administrator to join our Research Team.  Working under the direction of the Senior Research Administrator, the post holder will have a key role in providing a professional, efficient administrative service supporting the department’s research activity.  Regular tasks include organising research seminars and events, assisting with the promotion of research activity via social media and other channels, providing committee support and managing the research ethics application system.

The successful candidate will use their experience and initiative to decide on appropriate courses of action and will work independently, taking appropriate day-to-day decisions to resolve queries.  They will work flexibly to ensure the team functions effectively and in meeting priorities, working in accordance with University and Departmental policies and procedures, whilst demonstrating a commitment to service excellence.  They will work collaboratively with colleagues across the School to support the delivery of departmental objectives.

The successful candidate will be able to not only maintain but also develop and implement processes and systems to support the work of the School.  Candidates must possess exceptional organisational abilities and outstanding communication and customer service skills.

What you need to demonstrate when you apply/Person Specification

Your application should cover the following criteria:

Essential Criteria 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  
  • Exceptional organisational and time management skills and the ability to prioritise own work under pressure.
  • Good digital skills including experience in using core digital tools including internet, email, digital communication tools, Microsoft 365 applications, digital booking system.
  • Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent experience or qualifications). 
  • Experience of working with minimal instruction, using initiative and exercising good judgement in order to determine the correct course of action.
  • Experience of maintaining and improving systems and procedures to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Evidence of relevant personal development to maintain skills.  Relevant administrative experience in a busy office environment.  
  • Demonstrable ability to provide advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.  
  • Ability to solve problems and resolve straightforward issues independently.    
  • Good accuracy, numeracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work.
  • A high level of discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Desirable Criteria 

  • Post-16 qualification or equivalent experience.   
  • Experience Supporting committees (agendas and minutes)
  • Experience in preparing marketing materials and/or promotion through social media channels

    Role Delivery

    • Focus on maintaining Research project records to ensure the delivery of excellence to our staff.   
    • Act as first point of contact for research related queries.
    • Solve day-to-day routine problems and source background information within the role. 
    • Process requests finding solutions or escalating queries where necessary. 
    • Apply professional and regulatory procedures and processes and use of systems. 
    • Apply standard professional and recognised regulatory procedures to process, check and reconcile research project information
    • Use standard office-based digital systems, tools and equipment to support research activity.
    • Process and update key user guides, handbooks and procedure documentation.
    • Make venue, catering, travel and/or equipment arrangements for events, meetings and activities.
