The University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of

RECTOR

to lead the University and the University of Helsinki Group. The Board of the University will appoint the rector for a term of five years starting on 1 August 2023.

We are looking for an individual with a strategic vision for the development of the University of Helsinki and extensive knowledge of the academic world. You have insight into research and educational policy, and solid expertise in research and scholarship. You have an extensive collaboration network with various stakeholders. You are forward-looking and solution-driven and wish to contribute to the promotion of Finnish and international research, scholarship and education.

You are an experienced and respected leader. One of the University of Helsinki’s strategic choices is to invest in a healthy academic community. You are capable of engendering confidence and enthusiasm in our diverse community through your interactions. As rector, you will lead our community and operations on the basis of the University’s strategic plan and will uphold our shared values: truth, Bildung, freedom and inclusivity.

The rector is responsible, in accordance with the Universities Act, for the economical, efficient and effective discharge and further development of the University’s duties. You can provide evidence of successful management and leadership in a role with significant financial accountability. The University of Helsinki has a staff of approximately 8,300 and a budget of over €700 million. In total, the University of Helsinki Group has a staff of approximately 10,000. In 2021 it had a turnover of €1.1 billion and a balance sheet value of €1.9 billion. You have the experience and competence required to manage the finances and operations of a diversified group.

The appointee is expected to hold a doctoral degree. The position requires proficiency in Finnish, Swedish and English.
