Rankin-Sneddon Research Fellowship in Pure Mathematics x 2

Job Purpose  

The University of Glasgow invites applications for two 3-year Rankin-Sneddon Research Fellowships in the School of Mathematics and Statistics. The candidates will undertake independent research in a field of Pure Mathematics (broadly construed), that complements or reinforces the existing research strengths within the School.

While primarily a research position, these fellowships will carry a light teaching load, which will normally mean lecturing one 20-credit course, or two 10-credit courses, plus tutorials, each academic year. This will typically translate into approximately 4 contact hours per week in each of two 11-week semesters per year, the distribution of which may be flexible. Research fellows will also have the opportunity to supervise Honours and/or Masters Projects in their area of interest.

Main Duties and Responsibilities  

Primary

  • Undertake high-quality research of international standing in a field of Pure Mathematics that complements the existing research interests within the School of Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/School/Research Group, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, and gathering indicators of esteem.
  • Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile. Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and School research group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School.
  • Engage in teaching activities to a high standard and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School, as described above.
  • Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Head of School.
  • Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.

  • Secondary  

    The candidates will have the opportunity to perform the following activities:

  • Identify potential funding sources and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.
  • Develop and maintain, if appropriate, collaborations with colleagues across the research group/School/College/University and wider community (e.g. Academic and Industrial Partners).
  • Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of your research group to ensure their effective development.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School.
  • Contribute to outreach and recruitment activities of The University of Glasgow.
  • These key tasks are not intended to be exhaustive but simply highlight a number of tasks which the staff members may be reasonably expected to perform.

    Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience  

    Knowledge/Qualifications 

    Essential : 

    A1 An awarded PhD, or in the final year of the PhD programme, or equivalent in subject specialism.

    A2 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of the candidate's research area.

    A3 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the wider subject area or subject specialism.

    A4 An independent research programme with an emerging national or international reputation.

    Skills  

    Essential :

    C1 Research creativity and strong cross-discipline collaborative ability as appropriate.

    C2 Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including public presentations and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely.

    C3 Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approach.

    C4 Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skills.

    C5 Self-motivation, initiative and independent thought/working.

    C6 Problem solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approach.

    Experience  

    Essential:

    E1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience appropriate to an early career researcher.

    E2 Evidence of an emerging track record of presentations and publications in high quality journals.

    E3 Experience in undertaking independent research.

    E4 Appropriate track record of delivery of teaching, tutoring or demonstrating at undergraduate or postgraduate level appropriate to an early career researcher.

    Terms and Conditions

    Salary will be Grade 7, £37,474 - £42,155 per annum.

    This post is full time and fixed term for up to 3 years
