Aston University is offering an exciting opportunity to join our Student Welfare directorate as a Mental Health Specialist. The directorate encompasses several teams, providing specialist support to students at the University – including the Mental Wellbeing team; Counselling team; Enabling team; Accommodation Support and the Chaplaincy. The directorate is undergoing an exciting period of development and we are seeking an exceptional candidate who can embrace our ethos and continue to develop and innovate our services, in particular:
• Manage a case load of students with ongoing mental health difficulties
• Provide psychological support on a one-to-one basis, including devising strategies for students who are struggling to attend and engage.
• Offer guidance and advice to staff and student mentors working with students with mental health difficulties
• Respond to and coordinate crisis situations involving students in difficulty and assess the risk to themselves or others.
As a professionally qualified Registered Mental Health Nurse, Mental Health Social Worker or equivalent – with current registration with a relevant professional body - you will have recent experience of working in a front-line patient facing environment. It is desirable that you have experience of working in a Further Education or Higher Education institution.
You will have a thorough understanding of inclusive practices. You will have good IT skills, excellent written and verbal communications skills, and the ability to work productively under pressure. You will be flexible in your working approach and able to sometimes work outside of standard working hours. You will have outstanding judgement and will work closely with the Director of Student Welfare, providing advice relating to critical student welfare incidents.
The Mental Health Specialist will report to the Interim Team Leader: Mental Wellbeing (Mental Health Specialist).
The successful candidate is required to have clearance to work from the DBS (The Disclosure and Barring Service)
