Offer Description
Job description
We would like to invite applications for a Qualitative post-doctoral Research Associate to work on a National Institute of Health Research funded qualitative study to investigate the barriers and facilitators to accessing sexual health care for people with severe mental illness. The study has two parts: interviews with people with severe mental illness will explore the barriers and facilitators to accessing sexual health care in people with SMI from a service user perspective; and focus groups with sexual health clinicians will explore staff views and experiences of providing sexual health care to people with severe mental illness. The postholder will be responsible for conducting all interviews and focus groups under the supervision of Dr Margaret Heslin.
The post provides an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate to be part of a thriving centre for qualitative research that uses rigorous and innovative methods to understand and improve the experiences of people with mental health problems. The successful candidate will join the King’s Health Economics Research Group in the Health Services & Population Research Department, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, and be affiliated with the Qualitative Applied Health Research Centre (QUAHRC) at King’s.
The postholder will work closely with Dr Margaret Heslin, Senior Lecturer in Health Economics and Epidemiology at KCL.
At King’s, we are deeply committed to embedding good equality and diversity practice into all of our activities so that the university is an inclusive, welcoming and inspiring place to work and study, regardless of age, disability, LGBTQ+ status, marital status, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion, or sex. We welcome applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds and experiences, including those with disabilities; ‘reasonable adjustments’ are possible to support people in employment.
This post will be offered on a part time (50% FTE) fixed term contract until 31st May 2025.
Key responsibilities

- Working with the study lead, study team and wider research community within the department
- All recruitment activities, including liaising with research staff and clinician teams

- Conducting detailed and sensitive research focus groups with sexual health clinicians about their experience of providing sexual health care to people with severe mental illness (e.g., psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder)
- Leading on the analysis of qualitative data to inform our understanding of the barriers and facilitators to accessing sexual health care in people with severe mental illness
- Supporting with the collection and analysis of qualitative data on other studies if time permits
- Attending and contributing to study meetings, including presenting information on research progress
- Writing up and presenting results of projects for academic and non-academic audiences, e.g. peer reviewed journals, reports for stakeholder groups, seminars, conferences
- Any other duties as appropriate to the grade, as directed by the supervisor
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
