Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship (42 Months) to undertake the following research: 

Proteins in Alien Environments

Ever wondered what protein-based life might be like in low/no-water environments? What different types of reactions might be catalysed by a different landscape of catalytic folds? An exciting opportunity to work on understanding protein structure in ‘alien’ environments utilising computational chemistry methods, with opportunity for experimental collaboration.  Our group specialises in ionic liquid chemistry – solvents that are formed from ions, with unique properties – and are looking to develop machine-learning approaches to explore how different ions impact the chemistry of proteins. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD candidate to take on this challenge with a background in computational chemistry, computational biosciences, computing, mathematics or allied field. You have or expect to graduate with a first-class or good 2:1 honours degree, or a distinction or high merit at MSc level (or international equivalent).  The studentship is only available to students qualifying for HOME-UK status.
