The Role and the Department

The Computing and Information Services (CIS) has an annual operational budget in excess of £12m, multi-million pound programmes of change within year, and approximately 185 staff. The Senior Leadership Team report directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) with the following portfolios: Strategy and Change; Operations; Information Systems, and Cyber Security. CIS work with departments across the university to provide academic, teaching and administrative services that underpin the day-to-day activities of the whole organisation. CIS is a friendly, but demanding department, where much is expected and can be achieved by competent, self-motivated individuals who are demonstrable in their team work ability. The department works in a hybrid capacity depending on the job role and individual personal requirements.

The departments Project Management Office (PMO) is a driven and motivated team with a strong vision for what project management can achieve. The key responsibility of the Project Officer is to deliver the required project activities, within the specified time frame, within the specified cost, and to the expected quality. They will lead the planning and implementation of small project initiatives alongside supporting other members of the team to deliver larger project activities.

What you need to demonstrate when you apply/Person Specification

Your application should cover the following criteria:

Essential Criteria  

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including experience of writing documentation and reports and the ability to develop effective working relationships, both internally and externally.  
  • Strong digital competence with demonstrable skills in using core digital tools including internet, email and all Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Five GCSE’s at least Grade C or level four (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics (or equivalent experience).  
  • Post-16 qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of personal development to maintain skills.  
  • Experience of providing advice and guidance to a range of customers and colleagues.  
  • Experienced service provider with knowledge and expertise used to contribute to the delivery and development of services and activities within the organisation.   
  • Experience of implementing processes and procedures and involvement with future changes for a service area.  
  • Ability to effectively network and exchange advice and information for development purposes.
  • Ability to solve problems and resolve issues, plan solutions and make pragmatic decisions.
  • Demonstrable ability to proactively work with team members to ensure the delivery of high quality services.
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of contributing to the delivery of projects.
  • Experience of budget management.
  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience).
  • PRINCE2 or equivalent project management qualification.

    Role Delivery

    • Specialist support with problem solving and query handling in relation to projects within the IT portfolio. 
    • Reactive and proactive project management with others to deliver an excellent stakeholder experience. 
    • Carry out more in-depth investigations and research information and data to develop business cases and identify project benefits. 
    • Accountable for managing/maintaining financial and budget records in relation to project activities.
    • Involved in the purchase and return of goods and services. 
    • Ensure projects, activities, budgets and documents comply with internal University and external regulation, policy and procedures.
