Project Curator: Documentation Africa Oceania and the Americas

About the role:

Join the British Museum in this new opportunity to play an important role within the Africa, Oceania and the Americas department (AOA): to undertake documentary research on AOA collections, improving database records (and hence Collections Online) in support of the Museum Operating Plan and all relevant Museum strategies, under the direction of the AOA Keeper and relevant curatorial staff.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • In close collaboration with AOA curators and collection managers, to focus on upgrading the documentation of the AOA collection. A significant proportion of this work will relate to the Latin American collection.
  • To locate objects in storage, checking locations on MI+ are correct, adding dimensions and other relevant information to records, and to take and upload photographs as necessary
  • To undertake collections research to support record improvement.
  • To act as an advocate for the Museum
  • To work as a team member with colleagues within and beyond the department and do some departmental administrative work.

About you:

  • Experience and knowledge of collections documentation and storage issues and systems
  • Experience of research and documentation of ethnographic museum collections, particularly in relation to the Americas
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication, and ideally ability to present in public in an engaging manager.
