Company description:

We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.

Job description:

Engineering at Newcastle is truly pushing the boundaries of fundamental and applied chemical engineering into new and exciting applications such as the future of energy, sustainability, healthcare, advanced manufacturing and process industries. The Professor in Chemical Engineering (Advanced Materials) would complement existing strengths and provide the breadth of expertise and leadership required to further establish Newcastle as a major centre for advanced materials and chemical engineering research.

Based within the Chemical Engineering discipline, but with an interdisciplinary and cross-faculty ambition, the appointee will contribute to the further development of our expertise in design, development and characterisation of new materials. Novel materials are at the heart of addressing global challenges e.g. affordable and durable renewable energy generation, conversion and storage technologies and environmentally friendly adhesives and biosensors for cancer diagnosis. The ability to correlate the structure and functionality of materials is central to the successful and timely development of new materials, and materials for new application. Our current complement of staff highlights real research excellence and translational impact in the synthesis and modelling of new materials for energy, healthcare, information technology, construction, and environmental applications (including sustainable plastics). Focusing on material characterisation, this post will significantly increase research capability, expertise and opportunities, collaboratively expanding the area of engineering materials, including our facility for materials characterisation (NEXUS), which will be located in the near future in a new facility in the Stephenson building on the Newcastle main Campus.

The Professor of Chemical Engineering will join the the Advanced Materials and Electrochemical Engineering Science Group in developing advanced material design and characterisation activities across the University, with particular interest in further developing the capability through developing new technology or extending applications across the diverse chemical engineering field. The postholder would lead in obtaining new state of the instruments in NEXUS, which are complimentary to other techniques based on optical, soft-x ray and hard X-ray excitations. The appointee will build research, innovation and skills development partnerships and develop the societal and business impact of their research.
