Job Purpose

The role will focus on three areas: First, to make a substantial contribution to enhancing the development of clinical legal education in the field of social justice within the School of Law and the College of Social Sciences. This will include contributions to undergraduate, postgraduate and professional education across our degree and diploma programmes, and to executive education in the field of social justice across rights-based frameworks. Second, to undertake a senior leadership role in enhancing connections with communities of practice in the School of Law, and to develop and support the growth of knowledge exchange, engagement and impact relevant to the School’s world-class research. Third, to take substantial responsibility for promoting organisational and policy relationships in ways that enhance the reputation of the School, the College and the University, supporting the development of colleagues working in cognate areas and enhancing outreach and public understanding of how the rights of marginalized groups can effectively be realized in Scotland and beyond. Although applications are welcome in any area of social justice legal practice, the School has particular needs in the following areas: children’s rights; housing law; welfare rights.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.Take a leading role in developing and implementing the School of Law’s strategy for clinical legal education on social justice and rights-based frameworks across our programmes through connections with practice and law and policymakers.

2.Engage with colleagues in the School of Law on the development of learning and teaching programmes that feature experiential learning with a view to contributing and enhancing pedagogical practice in this area.

3.Lead the School’s activities relating to knowledge exchange and impact activities in relation to the lived experiences of rights holders, particularly within marginalized populations and/or where unmet legal need exists, understandings and perceptions of, and participation in, law and legal processes.

4.Maintain a substantial and personal track record of knowledge co-creation and co-development in the context of specific rights frameworks and policy practice along with contributions to public understanding.

5.Develop strategic partnerships with public, private and third sector organisations and policymakers.

6.Contribute to income growth derived from knowledge exchange activities including professional and executive education, and commercialization opportunities and related activities in the broad area of human rights education.

7.In collaboration, develop and submit research funding bids for projects including to large funding bodies such as UKRI and smaller charitable organization which include a significant KE/impact dimension.

8.Develop collegiality across the School by fostering effective internal and external networks and collaborations that support the development and mentoring of academic and professional services colleagues.

9.Make a substantial contribution to the life of the School through active involvement in its committees and working groups and by contributing to learning and teaching on undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional and executive programs; supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations; and attracting research students.

10.Represent the School/College/University on key external bodies and at external events (regional, national and international) to promote excellence in experiential learning, clinical legal education and teaching and the development of connections with practice.

11.Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

12.Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent expertise gained from practice in a relevant subject.

A2 An established and internationally recognised reputation for high-quality applied research and knowledge exchange in strategy and technology, services, operations and innovation, and/or entrepreneurship.

A3 Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of research and policy issues and debates, nationally and internationally, and future direction of research and teaching in the subject area.

A4 A track record of generating income in applied research and/or impact evaluation and commercialization activities from a range of sources.

A5 Fellowship or Membership of a relevant professional body.

Skills

C1 Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage at all levels within the Subject, School, College, University, and beyond, in academic, policy and practitioner communities.

C2 Demonstrably excellent presentation skills.

C3 Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to foster collegiality and collaborative working.

C4 Proven ability to foster research collaborations with colleagues in other disciplines, Schools, Colleges and Universities as appropriate.

C5 Proven time management and organisational skills.

C6 Proven project, people and budget management skills.

C7 Ability to integrate into a multidisciplinary School.

Experience

E1 An extensive track record of publications and reports (national and international) compatible with enhancing the School’s profile in strategy and technology, services, operations and innovation, and/or entrepreneurship.

E2 Significant experience of applied research and participation within significant international collaborations.

E3 Extensive track record of successfully securing external funding and project managing applied research and commercialization activities to completion.

E4 Significant participation at practitioner, professional or academic conferences, symposia and/or holding visiting or advising positions with organisations focusing on applied research, policy advice or commercialization.

E5 Evidence of a significant leadership role that will translate and contribute to the academic mission of the University (e.g. implementing research-based improvements in professional practice or impact in a specific discipline).

E6 Significant leadership contribution to activities that have changed practice and will contribute to the academic mission of the University (e.g. professional guidelines or review groups).

E7 Organisation of significant national and international conferences, symposia or collaborative industry, business or policy partnerships.

E8 Invited contributor to prestigious lectures, major reviews, expert witness investigations or national policy committees.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be within the Professorial range and subject to negotiation

This post is part-time (17.5 hours per week), and open ended.
