Professor in Digital Futures

Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Bristol, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime

The Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences is delighted to announce a new professorship. This is one of four new appointments (across the range Lecturer, Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor and Professor) to drive interdisciplinary research and partnership collaboration with the Bristol Digital Futures Institute (BDFI).

BDFI is committed to changing how we think about ‘digital futures’ and how we create technologies for inclusive, prosperous and sustainable societies through interdisciplinary collaboration. With investment through the Research England Research Partnership Investment Fund, BDFI has bespoke leading-edge research, education and co-creation facilities that are part of the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

In making these new appointments we aim to diversify the BDFI portfolio of expertise, building on previous appointments we have made. We would like to add to our expertise in particular areas such as digital health, cities and infrastructure, sustainability, manufacturing, creative industries, and education futures, but we also welcome applicants with interests in other areas of digital futures that would contribute to the BDFI.

We welcome applicants from Accounting and Finance, Anthropology, Economics, Education, Law, Management, Media, Philosophy, Policy Studies, Politics/International Relations and Human Geography . The successful candidates will have a permanent ‘home’ in whichever is the most appropriate School. However for the first five years these appointments will be seconded to the BDFI and play a critical role in shaping the intellectual agenda of the Institute at an exciting time in its development.

As a BDFI Professor you will:

  • Take a strategic leadership role in the development and growth of BDFI.
  • Drive a programme of internationally excellent interdisciplinary research in digital futures.
  • Build interdisciplinary research capacity, within the University of Bristol and beyond.
  • Lead collaborative activities with existing and new BDFI partners.
  • Promote BDFI at all levels, including with funders, government and through international networks.
  • You want to be part of a thriving interdisciplinary community of researchers and partners creating new knowledge and methods to proactively shape digital futures.
  • You are searching for a strategic leadership role and would welcome the opportunity to drive this new research institute forward.
  • You have an outstanding international reputation for excellence in research related to the BDFI, linked to one or more of the disciplinary areas listed above.
  • Have strong and relevant experience of interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Have an established track record of collaboration with government, industry and civil society.
  • Have wide experience of University level teaching, administration and leadership.
