Cardiff Professional Legal Studies - School of Law and Politics

Cardiff Professional Legal Studies (CPLS) is the department within the School of Law and Politics which offers the Graduate Diploma in Law, Legal Practice Course and Bar Professional Training Course - postgraduate routes to professional qualification for solicitors and barristers. Cardiff University is the only Russell Group University to offer all of these courses. CPLS also provides nationwide assessment of Duty Solicitors, Police Station Representatives and expert witnesses. Its courses – which are delivered by professionally qualified staff - are well established, highly regarded within the profession and command excellent levels of satisfaction from students.

The School wishes to appoint suitably qualified hourly paid teachers to contribute to the teaching of all of its courses. Our hourly paid tutors work closely with full-time members of staff in the delivery and assessment of our programmes. The ability to teach vocational legal subjects and to deliver legal skills training is essential. These posts are ideally suited to legal practitioners who wish to undertake some teaching alongside their professional legal practice.

Salary: £39,347 - £44,263 per annum, pro rata for hours worked (Grade 6)

Job Description

As part of a team, to assist with the delivery and design of teaching programmes, including preparing, supervising and marking different modes of assessment. Undertake departmental administrative tasks.  Supervise student projects/dissertations and carry out teaching-related administrative duties, carry out work associated with examinations, participation in committee work/exam boards. 

 MAIN ACTIVITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
•    Assist with the delivery and design of teaching programmes and contribute to module development as part of a module team, including, where appropriate, preparing teaching materials. Deliver teaching.  Includes communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse and the practical application of the law; observing and reacting to student interventions; providing constructive feedback, responding to questions outside class time and to contingencies in course delivery.
•    Carry out assessment for courses.  Includes assisting in the design of assessment instruments and criteria; marking assessments, ensuring adequate moderation; providing written/oral feedback to students; judging whether student circumstances should be taken into consideration in assessments.
•    If appropriate, supervise or mark extended essays or Masters projects.
•    Carry out course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; and implementing ideas for improving teaching delivery and own performance.
•    Act as a point of contact for both academic and pastoral student queries, signposting and referring students to relevant advice and support services. This may be in the capacity of a formal Personal Tutor, or as member of a module delivery team.
•    Carry out teaching related administrative duties as required, dealing promptly with reactive requests, such as those relating to teaching, supervising students and administrative tasks or actions from committees and working groups.
•    Undertake continuous professional development activities agreed with line manager and through supporting activities such as probation or annual PDR (performance development review.

PLANNING AND ORGANISING
•    Teaching-related and administrative work is allocated by the Head of CPLS, in conjunction with CPLS’s programme leaders.
•    Plan and prioritise own work, and forward plan for some teaching.
•    Deal with reactive requests such as those relating to teaching, supervising students and administrative tasks.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
1.  Qualified as a barrister, solicitor or legal executive.
2.  The ability to teach vocational law subjects on the Bar Training Course (BTC) and/or Legal Practice Course (LPC).
3.  The ability to deliver skills training on the BTC and/or LPC.
4.  The ability to design and update teaching materials.
5.  The ability to communicate orally with confidence and engage an audience.
6.  The ability to write with precision.
7.  Effective interpersonal skills to liaise with students and staff.
8.  Effective proven organisational skills and ability to effectively manage and prioritise own workload alongside a flexible and adaptable approach to work.
9. Ability to deal with reactive requests on a regular/daily basis, such as those relating to teaching, supervising students and administrative tasks
10. Ability to work collaboratively within a teaching team.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA

 1.  Proven teaching ability (for example, via a teaching qualification, or training provided to colleagues or other members of the profession).
2.  The ability to communicate in Welsh.
