Deadline: 09 Feb 2024

The University of East Anglia was built to embody a radical new vision for higher education, where interdisciplinarity is crucial, and excellence in both research and teaching is valued. Since 1963, we have been breaking down boundaries between students and researchers, arts and science, business and social responsibility. Today, we are consistently ranked within the top quarter of universities in the UK for the quality of research and teaching and are tackling some of the key challenges of the changing world and breaking new boundaries across our priority research themes of climate, creative and health.

Following a period of challenge, we are moving with purpose to re-launch the University’s ambitious Vision 2030, setting out how we are going to “think boldly, do things differently and lead the way”. This will also encompass a number of key new appointments to our Executive Team. Joining UEA at this time offers a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in the transformation of the University and to help set our future direction and ensure our prosperity and success.

As the University continues to innovate in pursuit of excellence, we are now seeking an exceptional Pro-Vice-Chancellor to lead our Faculty of Arts and Humanities and deliver on the University’s ambitions for arts and humanities over the coming years. Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, and a member of the University’s Executive Team, the PVC will encourage creativity and fruitful innovation in teaching and research, promote outstanding student experience and outcomes across the Faculty and play an important role in the leadership of the University.

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is a vibrant and stimulating environment where, through challenge-led project work and high-quality teaching and learning, we create opportunities for ground-breaking exploration with specific thematic interests in global perspectives, digital and health humanities, gender and identity, creative and cultural industries and heritage, as well as global justice and social responsibility. The Faculty is made up of the School of Art, Media and American Studies; the School of History; the Interdisciplinary Institute for the Humanities; the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing; the School of Politics, Philosophy, Language and Communication Studies; the Sainsbury Research Unit and the Sainsbury Institute for the study of Japanese Arts and Cultures.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor Arts and Humanities will be an inspiring and inclusive leader with sustained academic leadership experience gained at a strategic level who can engage and inspire staff. They will be a leading academic in their discipline, committed to the transformational power of higher education and passionate about delivering high-impact research and an exceptional student experience. A strategic thinker, with a high degree of integrity and excellent judgement, they will also have a genuine commitment to the mission and values of the University.
