The Kilpisjärvi Biological Station is one of three field stations operating under the auspices of the University of Helsinki Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, alongside the Tvärminne Zoological Station and the Lammi Biological Station. The station engages in year-round research, teaching and meeting activities. The University of Helsinki also has research stations in Värriö and Muddusjärvi in Lapland. All the stations serve the academic and wider communities. The scholarly competence and public engagement of the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station is being further developed on a long-term basis. We are now looking for experts interested in the Arctic region to contribute to this work.

The University of Helsinki and the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station are implementing a development project entitled ‘Science trails and the R&D&I services of research stations’, funded by the European Regional Development Fund in 2021–2023. The project will create digital research-based content for popular routes in Kilpisjärvi and will develop the R&D&I services of research stations. Science trails will help tourists understand their destination, arouse and satisfy their curiosity, and develop actual science tourism in the region. Science trails will provide seasoned visitors with new experiences, attract new tourists to the region, promote the region, encourage discussion, and offer visitors a better and more diverse understanding of the world. The digital infrastructure of the trails will enable the provision of research-based knowledge to the public and help the private sector develop service products in a way that supports the local tourism sector. Science trails allow the visitors to delve deeper into the landscape. In addition, the project will develop the other R&D&I services of the stations.

The Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of

PROJECT PLANNING OFFICER

for a fixed term ending on 31 March 2023. As the project planning officer, you will have the opportunity to implement digital science trails on popular outdoor and hiking routes in Kilpisjärvi together with a multidisciplinary team of experts. You will be responsible for the progress of the project, the planning and implementation of the trails, and for key collaboration with stakeholders. You will join a diverse team of experts who will support you in carrying out the project.

The position of project planning officer requires evidence of successful project expertise as well as good interaction and stakeholder skills. Applicants must hold a master’s or doctoral degree in the natural sciences as well as a driving licence (category B), and have good English skills. Experience in scientific research work and the development of digital services as well as skills in Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian and the Sámi languages will be considered an asset. The position requires partial on-site work at the Kilpisjärvi Research Station. The successful applicant will start as soon as possible. There is a six-month trial period for the position.

The appointee’s salary will be based on level 9 of the job requirement scheme for staff in other than teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The appointee’s monthly salary at the beginning of employment will range from €3,500 to €4,000, depending on their experience and education.
