The Helsinki Institute for Social Sciences and Humanities (HSSH) promotes and coordinates research cooperation and infrastructure development in humanities and social sciences (SSH) at the University of Helsinki. This work is led by four university researchers at the HSSH’s methodological unit. To strengthen this unit, we are now looking for

TWO PROJECT PLANNERS

to support the analysis and management of research methods and data needs in SSH disciplines. The positions are fixed-term for four years, starting as soon as possible.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The project planners will work in collaboration with the four university researchers at the Methodological Unit. Their task is to support researchers and research groups at the University of Helsinki City Centre Campus in the adoption and use of different research methods, and to assist research groups in collecting, processing and analysing research data. Together with the university researchers, the project planners will support the development of new research projects and organize workshops and other types of training to strengthen methodological competence in SSH research.

We are currently seeking candidates with expertise in at least one of the following areas:

  • Register and survey data. The candidate has experience in working with register, survey, and/or other forms of structured statistical data. The person we are looking for has competence in statistical methods, is familiar with at least one of the commonly used code-based analysis software (e.g. R, Stata, SAS) and is able to independently solve data-related problems in collaboration with the research groups.
  • Large-scale digital data. The candidate has experience in the collection and processing of large-scale unstructured data (such as extensive textual or linguistic material, social media data, data-based audiovisual material). The person we are looking for also has good programming skills (e.g. R/Python) as well as the ability to apply existing program libraries and tools to practical problems of the research groups. In addition, knowledge of computing and storage infrastructure and cloud services required for the processing and storage of large-scale datasets, especially through the systems of the IT Center for Science (CSC), is an advantage.
  • JOB REQUIREMENTS

    We expect applicants to possess an open mind toward the development of interdisciplinary research methods and the willingness to be involved in the creation of a new research culture as well as enhancing research infrastructures relevant to digital data.

    We expect the applicants to have

    • A Master's degree (or equivalent competence)
    • experience in statistical analysis and/or processing of digital data
    • the desire to learn and develop alongside changes in the research methodologies
    • good collaborative, negotiation and problem-solving skills

    The candidates will also benefit if they have

    • prior knowledge of multidisciplinary research
    • knowledge of the ethical and legal guidelines relevant to the use of research data

    SALARY AND BENEFITS

    We offer an exceptionally interesting opportunity to become a member of a new methodological unit and to collaborate with research groups within the HSSH, its national partners and growing international network.

    The salary is about 2800–3000 euros per month, depending on the experience and merits of the person selected for the position. There is a 6-month trial period.

    Professional development or postgraduate studies related to the work may be included in the job description, agreed on separately.
