Job overview

As part of multidisciplinary area and cultural studies, the discipline of Latin American studies explores the cultures and societies of a major region from global and comparative perspectives. The multidisciplinary studies examine the region’s modern history, social and political issues, international relations and contemporary cultures.

The professor/associate professor/assistant professor must carry out and supervise scholarly work, provide teaching based on it, follow developments in research, and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in their field. They must also contribute to doctoral education and the development of teaching, and obtain research funding.

The appointee is expected to be familiar with the current trends in Latin American studies and provide evidence of the development of methods and theories in area and cultural studies. The duties of the professor/associate professor/assistant professor include the development of the field and the generation of research cooperation projects in collaboration with international partners.

The appointee will provide teaching primarily in the Faculty of Arts Master’s Programme in Area and Cultural Studies and doctoral programmes at the City Centre Campus.

The appointee is expected to contribute innovatively to the development of the field. Their duties also include providing teaching in the field with an interdisciplinary approach and acquiring external funding for international research projects that will advance the field.

Appointment criteria

The qualification requirements for an assistant/associate professor include a doctoral degree, the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills required by the position. In addition, the appointee must have the ability and motivation to pursue an academic career, as demonstrated by publications and other means.

The qualification requirements for a professor include a doctoral degree, high-level academic qualifications, experience in leading scientific research, the ability to provide high-level research-based teaching and supervise theses, as well as evidence of international cooperation in the research field they represent. In addition, holders of a professorship must have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value, success in obtaining external research funding, scholarly work outside Finland and international elected positions. As regards teaching qualifications, consideration will be given to teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration, as well as participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, account will be taken of the applicant’s leadership and interaction skills, as well as activity in the research community.

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English, Spanish and/or Portuguese skills. If the successful applicant is not proficient in Finnish/Swedish, he or she is expected to acquire sufficient proficiency in Finnish/Swedish within a reasonable period of time. The appointee will be offered support for studying the language.

What we offer

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant/associate professor) or levels 8–10 (professor) of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The annual gross salary of an assistant/associate professor is approximately €50,000–€68,500, and that of a professor, approximately €64,000–€96,000, depending on their qualifications and work experience.
