The Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health (Faculty of Medicine, Health and Social Care) holds a distinguished record of arts (singing and choir) for health and wellbeing research projects and activities. We are currently building on the expansion of the SDH portfolio across creative and performing arts (theatre/drama, digital arts etc.) for a wider range of health conditions (physical, mental, emotional, social etc.) and age populations (i.e. children and young people, adults and elderly). We aim to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and impact of the arts on health, care, wellbeing and related policy and public services.

This post will play a key role in the delivery of this ambition, providing support to projects and people working on research related to SDH. The postholder will work closely with Professor Persephone Sextou and other research staff within the Centre supporting a wide range of Research and Knowledge Exchange activities in this area of strength.

The Role

Reporting to Professor Persephone Sextou, (Centre Director), your responsibilities involve:

  • carrying out project management duties for SDH project(s) such as design and delivery of studies, leading and submitting ethics applications and leading data management and analysis - with support and oversight by the Director of SDH or/and Project Lead
  • ensuring work package activities, deliverables and outputs are completed on time and as per agreed project application expectations
  • liaising effectively with other project partner and external stakeholders as per requirements of the project and Project Lead’s guidance
  • managing and monitoring work undertaken by researchers of the SDH team, including design of the methodology, collection of data, analysis of data and writing up of results
  • leading and contributing to writing up of project reports to the stakeholders within the agreed deadlines, academic papers, commissioned book chapters and other related written communication for the needs of the project
  • carrying out other appropriate duties as assigned by the Director of SDH

The Person

Essential requirements:

You will have a PhD in a subject aligned to aspects of Arts and Health and will have proven experience in writing bids and completing funded research projects in a related Arts and Health field. You will need to demonstrate that you possess sufficient breadth and depth of specialist knowledge in quantitative and qualitative research approaches, methods and techniques in a HE setting. It is essential to have experience of publishing and presenting research findings. Experience in writing funding applications, budgeting and following research ethics processes is also required, as is an awareness of the ethical and legal requirements of working with people in healthcare and vulnerable individuals and community groups.

Desirable requirements:

You will have a Masters/MRes in a subject aligned to Performing/Digital Arts/Mental Health/Psychology. It would also be advantageous to demonstrate knowledge in creative research approaches (i.e. arts-based, sensory, digital-films) and to have experience of the NHS application system.
