Role Summary

Working alongside a team of dedicated careers professionals in Careers Network at The University of Birmingham, the post will develop a programme of activity for Postgraduate Taught and Postgraduate Research students informed through collaboration with employers and with a focus on employability skills development and employer-led projects. The post will be instrumental in developing and maintaining effective relationships with a wide range of employers offering jobs, projects, work experience and internships for postgraduate students (PGT & PGR) on a regional, national and international level. The post will also undertake group work and information sharing sessions for postgraduate students.

The role will directly impact on the success of the University’s Employability Strategy and the UGS Strategy by offering External Engagement opportunities to our Postgraduate (PGT &PGR) students, a significant proportion of which are international students.  

Person Specification

  • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent qualifications). Where no equivalent qualification is held, significant practical relevant experience and expertise in a similar role will be required.
  • Excellent relationship building and stakeholder management skills and the ability to adapt to a diverse range of stakeholder groups.
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
  • Knowledge of higher-level skill requirements and understanding of the needs of postgraduate and international students.
  • Evidence of literacy and numeracy, with the ability to write clearly, and to produce and analyse information and data.
  • A good understanding of Higher Education and the issues impacting on student employability.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Experience of persuading and negotiating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and use of initiative to resolve problems.
  • Adaptable and flexible when faced with change demonstrating drive and resilience to ensure projects are developed and implemented.
  • Excellent team working skills and ability to cross-promote services.
  • Experience of advising and supporting others in a professional capacity.
  • Experience of monitoring and evaluating processes.
  • Ability to work independently and to manage own work programme.
  • Experience working with software (such as a CRM system) or other systems, including Microsoft Office packages, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Experience of using data to inform priorities and activity.
  • Ability to work flexibly and out of hours on occasions.
