Postdoctoral Training Fellow

This is a full-time,fixed term (4 years) position on Crick terms and conditions of employment.

One of the fundamental characteristics of tumour cells is their altered metabolism. Mariia Yuneva’s group focuses on understanding the role of metabolism in different aspects of tumorigenesis. We combine state of the art technologies including different metabolomics platforms with genetic analysis and in vivo systems to evaluate the requirement of metabolic pathways altered in tumours. We are also interested in dissecting the role of metabolism in tumour evolution, heterogeneity and metastasis. Our group consists of postdocs, PhD students and lab research scientists.

Project summary

The research aims to understand the requirement of metabolic remodelling during metastasis. In this project, some of the specific aims could include but not be limited to:

• Using mass spectrometry-based metabolomics analysis as well as mass spectrometry imaging to evaluate the activity of metabolic pathways and levels of metabolites in tumour cells and their environment;

• Using Cre-LoxP system, RNAi and CRISPR-mediated approaches to evaluate the role of specific genes and metabolic pathways in tumorigenesis and metastasis formation;

• Using various analytical methods to evaluate the molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic remodeling and metabolic dependencies of tumour cells.

A broad range of state-of-the-art scientific technology platforms (STPs) are available at the Francis Crick which will facilitate the progress of the research.

Key experience and competencies

Postdoctoral Training Fellows are expected to lead their own projects, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis (both in the lab and with external collaborators) and guide PhD students in their research. The ability to work in a team is essential.

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, imaginative, open, dynamic and collegial, in addition to the following:

Essential

• A PhD in Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology or similar (or in the final stages of completion)

• Excellent knowledge and understanding of molecular cell biology and biochemistry

• Experience and substantial hands-on lab experience with cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology

• Track record of publication evidenced by published or submitted research manuscripts in refereed journals

• Evidence of data presentation using effective written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to work independently and also capable of interacting within a group

Desirable

• Experience in cancer metabolism

• Experience in mass spectrometry

• Experience in metabolomics

• Experience with animal models

• Experience with the models of metastasis

• Experience in using MATLAB and R
