Postdoctoral Scientist - Cell Biology - Dr Buzz Baum - LMB 1733

Updated: over 2 years ago
Location: Cambridge, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 16 Dec 2021

Fixed term, 3 years

MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scientist position in the group of Dr Buzz Baum at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB), Cambridge, to work within a programme interested in understanding the evolution of cell division. Specifically, to undertake research exploring replicative ageing in archaea through the study of the asymmetric inheritance of misfolded proteins and protein aggregates at division.

The candidate will be expected to develop new probes for live imaging that can be used to label misfolded proteins and protein aggregates – so experience in protein chemistry will be useful. In addition, a background in cytoskeletal biology, biophysics, mathematical modelling, and imaging will be important as you will explore the mechanics of the division asymmetry itself.

Candidates should have a PhD in a subject relevant to the project (ideally cytoskeletal remodelling / protein aggregate disassembly) or be due to complete doctoral studies within 6 months of applying in a relevant subject. Candidates should also have an understanding of protein chemistry as an aid to the development of probes for live imaging. A background in biophysics and high-resolution imaging will be important as will experience in computational programming / modelling.

The successful applicant will be awarded a 3-year Career Development Fellowship/ Postdoctoral Training Scheme position.  This is a training and development position for a Postdoctoral Scientist who has recently completed their doctoral studies, is moving into a new research discipline or has limited experience of key transferable skills. The MRC LMB has excellent scientific core facilities and training opportunities.
