Deadline: 30 Jan 2024

Centre for the Study of Social Cohesion, within the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography at the University of Oxford seeks to appoint a postdoctoral researcher on a project on the psychology of global cohesion. Funded by the Wayfarer Foundation, the postdoctoral researcher will collaborate with Prof Harvey Whitehouse to investigate the potential for global cohesion to help address a number of collective action problems facing the world today: from climate change and intergroup conflict to migration and food security.

Preliminary research using priming studies has shown that although scientific arguments are intellectually persuasive, bonding based on shared experience and feelings of kinship has a significantly bigger impact on behaviour when it comes to action on global issues. This project will build on those findings through empirical research and also work to leverage larger grants to develop a more ambitious version of the project. Outputs will include academic articles in high-impact academic journals and associated mass media engagement.

We seek to commence the project on 1st April 2024 for a period of six and a half months.

The deadline for applications is 12 noon on Tuesday 30th January 2024.

Interviews will take place on Wednesday 7th February 2024.
