The Faculty of Music proposes to appoint two postdoctoral researchers for 12 months from September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter to work on the ERC Advanced Grant 'Music and Late Medieval European Court Cultures' (MALMECC).
The project seeks to develop a new, post-national and trans-disciplinary method of studying pre-modern cultures; specifically, the focus is on European courts of the ‘long’ 14th century, defined as 1280 - 1450. The project seeks to achieve its objectives through the systematic collaboration of a team of scholars drawn from relevant disciplines (including but not limited to architectural history, art history, general history, intellectual history, modern and classical languages, musicology) under the leadership of the Principal Investigator (PI), Karl Kügle. Each team member works on a specific sub-project. Applicants are invited to propose a sub-project of their own that complements or enhances the current sub-projects in a creative and innovative way, and that can demonstrably be brought to fruition within a 12-month time span.
Reporting to the project’s Principal Investigator (PI), Karl Kügle, the postdoctoral researchers will pursue an individual research project. They will liaise with the research team and the PI to refine and develop their research and ensure synergy within the entire project, producing one or more articles to be submitted to a top-quality journal or equivalent scholarly publication during their tenure. In addition, they will present their research results and represent the project at (inter)national conferences or meetings. Postdoctoral researchers are also encouraged to engage in informal publishing and social media activities, for example by contributing blog posts on the project website.
Candidates should hold, or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant field (thesis submitted by agreed starting date), and may come from any of the disciplines relevant for the period 1280 - 1450. A significant research output (or promise thereof) is essential, as well as proven organisational skills and the ability to work congenially within a team.
As well as a CV and letter of application detailing how they meet the selection criteria, candidates will provide a supporting statement of no more than 1500 words (including bibliography) detailing their proposed sub-project. Please see the ‘How to Apply’ section of the Further Particulars for more information.
More information on the project and sub-projects can be found on the MALMECC website at: www.malmecc.eu and www.malmecc.eu/research-areas/. For informal inquiries, please contact Martha Buckley (project administrator).
The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 12 July 2019. We anticipate that interviews will take place on Friday 26 July 2019.
