The role will involve the designing and delivery of innovative, high-quality research into aversive learning and decision making in the context of pain. The project that is part of the NIHR Oxford Health BRC initiative and aims to predict the transition from acute to chronic pain in patients with sciatica by identifying and characterising change points in learning and decision-making and their association with recovery during the first year after symptom onset. The research will use computational modelling of psychological, peripheral-physiological and motor data to develop a mechanism-based understanding of pain chronification.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Plan, conduct, analyse and publish experimental and observational studies as defined by the project
- Adapt existing and develop new research methodologies and materials
- Assemble research resources, such as code and data, for open dissemination on appropriate open science platforms
- Contribute ideas for new research projects, and develop ideas for generating research income
- Present research outcome at national and international meetings
- Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
It is expected that the post-holder has a PhD in neuroscience, psychology, computer science or related disciplines or close to receiving their PhD. Candidates close to receiving their PhD or a less experienced candidate may be appointed at Grade 6 (£32,332 – £38,205 per annum), with a commensurate adjustment in either the essential criteria, responsibilities or duties. It is desirable that the post-holder has experience in original design and implementation of innovative tasks across a range of platforms.
This post is full time and fixed term till 30th November 2025.
