Currently, the Department of Built Environment has 30 professors together with lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students, and technical staff. In total, the number of departmental personnel is about 200.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER in COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS

We seek a highly qualified and motivated individual, with an enthusiastic attitude towards high-quality research, to work as a Post-doctoral Researcher at the Department of Civil Engineering in the team of Computational Structural Engineering supervised by Associate Professor Jarkko Niiranen (https://research.aalto.fi/fi/persons/jarkko-niiranen ). The full-time position is guaranteed for one year and should start during the Spring 2024.

The research activities of the candidate shall focus on the theoretical and computational analysis of thin structures (bars, beams, membranes, plates and shells) in the context of architected cellular structures (e.g., lattices and foams).

The teaching duties of the position are limited to about ten percent of working hours and related to the Master’s Programme in Building Technology (on such courses as Engineering Computation and Simulation, Finite Element Methods in Civil Engineering, Mechanics of Beam and Frame Structures, Mechanics of Plate and Shell Structures, Stability of Structures or Material Modeling in Civil Engineering). Possibilities for pedagogical studies and for serving as an instructor for students (of Bachelor’s Thesis, Master’s Thesis or Doctoral Dissertation) are available as well.

The position includes funds for attending international conferences but expectations for applying external research funding as well.

Qualifications

By the time of recruitment, the selected candidate should have a doctoral degree in a related field (civil engineering, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics etc.), obtained within the last five years. Experience in authoring scientific articles in high-quality journals and proficiency in written and spoken English are required as well.

Experience on university level teaching and funding applications is considered as additional merits.

  • list of publications – separating journal publications from others
  • research plan – including the scientific or societal relevance (max three A4 pages)
  • a certified copy of doctoral degree certificate and its translation (if the originals are not in English, Finnish or Swedish)
  • proof of proficiency in English (if the applicant is not a native speaker of, or has not received education in, the language)
