We are inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to work on the within-host evolutionary dynamics, and transmission, of chronic viral infections (HIV and hepatitis C virus). The aim of this project is to better understand how within-host evolutionary and ecological processes affect viral evolution at the epidemiological scale.
You will be responsible for developing new, and adapting existing, analysis methods and mathematical models to better understand within-host viral evolution and compartmentalisation. You will test hypotheses and analyse data, including viral deep-sequencing data, reviewing and refining working hypotheses as appropriate, and contribute to and develop new research ideas. You will carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups, and participate in the dissemination of this work via presentations at academic meetings and conferences.
It is essential that you hold a PhD (or close to completion) in quantitative biology or another appropriate science, and have specialist knowledge in genetics, modelling and pathogen dynamics. You will have strong analytical and quantitative skills and excellent problem-solving abilities, with expertise in at least one programming language or mathematical platform (C, Python, JAVA, PERL, R, Matlab etc.). Excellent communications skills including the ability to write for publication, and present, and be able to independently lead a research project whilst meeting deadlines is also essential for the role.
Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience.
This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 3 years and is funded by the Wellcome and the Li Ka Shing Foundation
Only applications received before 12 midday on Wednesday 25 August 2021 will be considered. Please quote 152016 on all correspondence.
