This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to join the Lakhal-Littleton lab and contribute to our research.

Reporting to Prof Lakhal-Littleton, the successful as a member of a research group will be responsible for carrying out research to understand the role of cardiac hepcidin/ferroportin axis in the management of iron deficiency in heart failure.

The post holder will provide guidance to less experienced members of the research group, including postdocs, research assistants, technicians, as well as PhD and project students. The researcher will be managing the role of hepcidin in heart failure project, carrying out experiments independently and contributing to data analysis and interpretation. They will also manage all the mouse colonies for Prof Lakhal-Littleton’s lab, by genotyping the animals and ensuring all breeding is carried out to meet experimental demands.

They will be responsible for running human plasma samples for measuring the level of iron, ferritin and transferrin in a myocardial Infraction by PENTRA machine. As such responsible to run ELISA to measure the level of Hepcidin, IL-6, Erythroferrone, Furin and Erythropoietin in Human and Mice and also measure gene expression, RT-PCR to measure the gene expression level of those parameters.

The post holder also responsible to follow up the heart infraction size after LAD surgery and measure the infraction size and cardiac functions by scanning the mice with CINE MRI and follow up accumulations of the labile iron in the heart and other organs using bioluminescence imaging techniques (IVIS).

They will meet with Prof Lakhal-Littleton and the group regularly to analyse and interpret the data and are expected to contribute new ideas and hypotheses to develop the project further. The post holder provides guidance to the junior lab membranes and less experienced members of the research group, including students, technicians, research assistants and postdocs.

The position is funded by MRC until 23rd 2026.
