Duration: 2 years with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding availability for up to 4 years.

The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is offering a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Global Health Bioethics, with a focus on capacity building in low and middle-income countries. This fellowship is part of the Global Health Bioethics Network (GHBN), a collaboration between the Wellcome Trust Africa and Asia Programmes and the Ethox Centre at the University of Oxford.

Based in KwaZulu-Natal, AHRI the fellow will work within AHRI's Social Science Department.

The successful applicant will support scientific and research activities within the GHBN, focusing on developing capacity in bioethics, social science, and community engagement science. This involves encouraging ethical reflection in work conducted at AHRI and collaborating with leading researchers locally and internationally. The fellow will also have opportunities to develop their work and apply for competitive grant funding within the field of bioethics.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of Nothando Ngwenya, the fellow will:

  • Act as the lead scientific liaison for day-to-day oversight of research activities.
  • Support the design of data collection instruments, obtain IRB approvals, and analyze associated data.
  • Work with research teams in Durban and Somkhele to support the implementation of study protocols and monitor data collection and quality in the field.
  • Supervise, orient, and train project students and staff.
  • Support capacity building at project sites by presenting work to local stakeholders and research collaborators.
  • Qualifications:

    Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g., Bioethics, Medical Anthropology, Psychology) and a record of scholarly publication. Desired experiences include expertise in research design and data analysis, fieldwork engagement, collaboration with global health and HIV researchers, and prior supervision of research teams in low- and middle-income settings. Proficiency in IsiZulu is beneficial for effective communication during data collection.
