The post

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in EPSRC grant EP/T006250/1 “Composites for Life” examining the use of PEEK family of carbon fibre thermoplastic composites to manufacture thick-section components – the next frontier for polymer composite materials. The project aim is to produce several real-world, functioning aviation and automotive components as specified by our supporting partners, heralding a step-change in materials use in these sectors. The successful applicant will conduct a programme of research seeking to create a viable the manufacturing route for these materials under the guidance of Dr Luke Savage. This is a hands-on role, involving the manufacture of samples/prototypes using laboratory moulding machines, in conjunction with the use of materials analysis.

The post will include input into the design of tooling, manufacture of samples and prototypes the operation of compression moulding equipment, materials analysis (e.g. via Scanning Electron Microscopy, Computer Tomography, and optical microscopy). Materials testing following ISO standard test schedules, input into the design of full prototype trials. Input into the drafting of publications, Preparing and delivering conference presentations.

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will have a background in composite science and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will be able to conduct design iterations where a working knowledge of Solidworks would be an advantage.
