The post
The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in a proof-of-concept project to apply acoustics and metamaterials to agriculture and plant science. This EPSRC funded post is available from 1 May 2023 to 1 May 2024. The successful applicant will work with biologists (Mike Deeks and the wider Mezzanine research team) and physicists (Tim Starkey and Alastair Hibbins) as well as our industrial partners to measure the impact of acoustic mechanical stimuli on potato and the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana.
The post will include:
- Conducting comprehensive literature searches and DNA homology searches to identify genes of interest in potato.
- Propagation of potato plants in tissue culture under aseptic conditions.
- Performing RNA preps of plant tissue and performing real-time RT QPCR.
- Interacting with the CONTRAST team to quantify changes in potato development using SRS imaging.
- Participation in regular project meetings and workshop for wider stakeholders, as well as co-authoring final reports for the project sponsors.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in plant science and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will possess skills in molecular biology techniques for RNA and DNA in the context of plant science and have understanding of aseptic technique with skills in plant tissue culture. Experience of interacting with interdisciplinary teams and using Raspberry Pi systems (or the equivalent) to collect plant growth data or to control experiments would be beneficial.
