Summary of the role
The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in Project LANDSLIDE – Next Generation Well Bore-Hole Equipment for Geothermal, Oil & Gas Industries. The challenge will be to help develop a new type of pipe centraliser with very low friction characteristics but also with sufficient resistance to wear, that is low cost and reliable. This Innovate UK funded post is available from 15th November 2022 to 31st March 2024. This is a classic Materials Science project where the successful applicant will conduct a programme of research seeking to create a practical solution that will have commercial value. The challenge will be to develop a series of low friction materials (using powder moulding) that are also tough and robust, demonstrating a stable wear rate and thermal resilience.
The post could include input into the design of tooling, manufacture of samples and prototypes the operation of compression moulding equipment, materials analysis (e.g. via Scanning Electron Microscopy, Computer Tomography, and optical microscopy). Materials coupon testing following ISO standard test schedules, lab-based testing using a pin on dsic wear friction and wear machine, and creating a new type of test tests for the prototypes we make. In addition, help with drafting of publications, and preparing/delivering conference presentations.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will have a background in Tribology or composite science or possess a materials science/mechanical engineering background with a track record of research-project delivery in the past. Applicants will be able to conduct design iterations where a working knowledge of Solidworks would be an advantage.
