Faculty of Health and Life Sciences
This full-time post is available immediately on a fixed term basis until 31 December 2025 in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
The post
The Faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to investigate the biology of pluripotency in the research team of Prof Austin Smith. This European Research Council funded post is available from 3 October 2022 to 31 December 2025. Based in the interdisciplinary Living Systems Institute, the successful applicant will lead a programme of investigations into the comparative biology of pluripotency and pluripotent stem cells in different mammals. A key goal will be to establish and validate naïve pluripotent stem cells from non-human primates and from livestock species using pluripotency network resetting and somatic cell reprogramming approaches. In addition, derivations from livestock embryos will be pursued in collaboration with Prof Ramiro Alberio, University of Nottingham.
The post will involve stem cell culture experimentation including molecular reprogramming, genetic manipulation, signalling pathway manipulation, and focussed chemical and genetic screening. Transcriptomic and multi’omics analyses will be carried out in partnership with computational/bioinformatics group members.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in developmental or stem cell biology and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in molecular cell biology to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will have experience in cell culture, developmental biology, molecular biology and genetic manipulation. Knowledge of signalling pathways and experience of chemical and genetic screening are not essential but would be an advantage.
