The post
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in the Convex Blue Carbon Seascape Survey, an international project that seeks to solve the question of what role the oceans play in climate change via carbon sequestration. This privately funded (Convex Insurance Group) post is available immediately. The successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Data mining of existing resources (maps, cores, seabed sediment assessments) worldwide and to identify core material for carbon analysis
- Involvement in devising a seatime campaign to obtain new cores from shelf mud sequences
- Deriving age models for both legacy and fresh cores
- analysing the cores for organic and inorganic carbon, content to derive measurements of carbon flux/burial
- Using these data to constrain hydrodynamic simulations of continental shelf sedimentation derived from another module of the project.
About you
The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in Quaternary marine geology and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will be able to be fully involved in the CONVEX Blue Seascape Survey project, to provide intellectual and technical leadership in the field of blue carbon, to publish in a timely manner all results deriving from the project, to deliver the results of the project at appropriate scientific meetings, to initiate and deliver appropriate outreach activity relating to the project, to develop an independent scientific research portfolio leading to an academic career, to supervise technical staff, to co-supervise research students both within and outside the projcet as appropriate, and to contribute to teaching activity within the Department of Earth and Environmental Science as appropriate.
