This full time post is available immediately on a fixed term basis until 30 September 2024. This role offers the opportunity for hybrid working – some time on campus and some from home.

Summary of the role

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in carrying out fundamental research within the Data Centric Engineering Group at Exeter and the Alan Turing Institute under Professor Tim Dodwell. The post will include, in addition to their research, supervision of PhD students, and opportunities to collaborate with industrial partners and international leading research groups. 

The successful applicant will carry out fundamental research to support Professor Tim Dodwell’s 5 year Turing AI Fellowship in Data Centric Engineering. We welcome applications from a broad range of interdisciplinary backgrounds including statistics, machine learning, applied mathematics and/or engineering. In particular, applicants with experience in model order reduction, MCMC methods, Bayesian Neural Networks, Uncertainty Quantification or high-performance scientific computing / modelling are encouraged.

The position will develop new mathematical methods which underpin the development of “Digital Twins” of complex engineering systems, which require the close synergy of high fidelity mathematical simulations and real-time data. The fellow will have the opportunity to work on various real-world applications which might include design of aerospace structures, structural health monitoring of 3D printed bridges, energy modelling of buildings and air traffic control.

You will:

  • be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals;
  • identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds, and make presentations at conferences and other events;
  • possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study;
  • be a nationally recognised authority in data science, AI or applied mathematics and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies;
  • be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.
