Summary of the role

The faculty wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in a research project aimed at understanding synergy between bacterial defense systems. This UKRI-funded post is available from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2026. The successful applicant will conduct high-throughput experiments on a large collection of clinical isolates of pathogenic bacterial species, to measure how selection acts on defence combinations, and carry out follow-up experiments to understand the mechanisms that underpin synergy or antagonism between defences.

The post will include high-throughput bacterial growth assays, advanced data analysis, SOS reporter assays, experimental evolution & single cell microscopy (in collaboration).

About you

The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in molecular microbiology and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will be able to assess, interpret and evaluate outcomes of research, and develop new concepts and ideas to extend intellectual understanding.
