Postdoctoral Research Fellow in optical neural networks (experiment)

Updated: about 1 month ago
Location: Oxford, ENGLAND
Deadline: 15 Mar 2024

Applications are invited for Postdoctoral Research Fellow in optical neural networks (experiment)

The posts are available initially for a fixed-term duration of 1 year, with the possibility of extension subject to funding.

The project is to implement artificial neural networks using optics rather than electronics. Optical neural networks would enable us to enhance both the power efficiency and speed of neural networks by several orders of magnitude. The specific aim is to develop a conceptually novel deep optics neural network system for computer vision. This system will allow an optical neural network to “see” and interpret objects directly, bypassing the processing bottleneck associate with converting an image into an electronic form. Such a system will have ultra-low latency and find applications in autonomous vehicles, remote sensing and intelligent robotics.

The successful candidate(s) will manage their own academic research in the outlined area. They will be involved in several projects including application of quantum optics in machine learning and robotics as well as linear-optical superresolution microscopy.

Tasks will include collaborating on reports and journal articles, carrying our collaborative projects with partner institutions, representing the research group at external meetings and seminars and developing ideas for generating research income. The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should hold, or be close to completion of a PhD in physics or a related field and possess a superb past research/publication record, excellent understanding of experimental optics and quantum physics as well as strong scientific writing skills.

Knowledge of machine learning and expertise in optical images are desirable

Please direct enquiries about the role to Prof. Alex Lvovsky ([email protected])

Only applications received before midday (UK time) 15 March 2024 can be considered You will also be asked to upload a CV, scans of undergraduate and graduate transcripts (translated if necessary) and a supporting statement as part of your online application.
