Offer Description
Dementia is the biggest health challenge of our century.
To date there is no way to prevent it or even slow its progression, and there is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in our basic understanding of the diseases that cause it.
The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is the biggest UK initiative driving forward research to fill this gap.
Researchers at the UK DRI at Edinburgh aim to piece together how all the different brain cells, systems and processes work together to keep our brains healthy over many decades. Unravelling how these finely-tuned interactions are disturbed even before a person has any specific signs or symptoms of dementia – and how changes are involved in driving disease progression – will open new avenues for the development of novel therapies.
We are looking for a post-doctoral fellow to join an exciting project to predict dementia from CT and MRI brain scans from data collected in the Scottish National Health Service, which have been made available through the Scottish Medical Imaging Service . The opportunity is funded by Neurii , a collaboration of organisation aiming to translate world-class data, neurology and digital sciences into projects that can enhance the quality of life of people living with dementia.
Although the project is initially for one year, if it is successful then four years of further funding is possible.
The successful candidate will work with a world-leading team of imaging scientists based in the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, and work in collaboration with scientists in artificial intelligence at Schools of Engineering and Informatics. The successful candidate will report to Professor Joanna Wardlaw CBE, one of the UK’s leading scientists, and Dr Maria Valdes Hernandez, Row Fogo Lecturer in Medical Image Analysis.
